For some time after WWII, automobiles were largely a public means of transport in Japan and not for private use. The trend for private car ownership actually began with commercial-use vehicles, and it was the 3-wheeled Midget released in 1957 that pushed this trend into the mainstream. Affordable and easy to handle, the car only required a minivehicle license to drive, causing sensations and becoming the representative 3-wheeler of the time. The inaugural DKA model had motorcycle-like features such as a kickstarter and a handlebar, indicating the manufacturer’s resolve to cut down costs by any means necessary.
