The Valiant was Chrysler’s answer to the growing popularity of smaller cars, but it was a fairly commonplace front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle with a monocoque body that could be said to be little more than a scaled down model of their full-sized cars and their iconic tail fins. When it first appeared, the Valiant was a new distinct brand, but starting the next year it was sold as the Plymouth Valiant. During its first year 190,000 vehicles were sold, but sales were not able to be increased as much as hoped after that due to an economic slump throughout the Chrysler Corporation. In addition, the Barracuda model that was developed (in 1965) based on the Valiant to compete with the Ford Mustang proved to be more popular.
