64年式、ホンダ S500 AS280型

　“当時、すでに2輪メーカーとして名を馳せていたホンダが4輪分野へ進出、本格的なライトウェイトスポーツであるS500を送り込んだ。デビューは1963年、前年に発表したプロトタイプS360の生産型である。531ccの超小型4気筒ツインカムには4基のCVキャブを装着して44hp/8000rpmの出力から最高速度は130km/h。小型車としては驚異的なパフォーマンスと軽快な2座オープンボディから若者の憧れを一身に集めることになった。その後、このモデルはS600、S800へと発展、本田技研工業の自動車部門の基礎を築き上げた。”

Widely known as a manufacturer of motorcycles, Honda ventured into 4-wheel-vehicle production in 1963 with the release of its first real lightweight sports car, the model S500. This was a production model based on the S360 prototype announced in the previous year. Equipped with a super-small, 4-cylinder, twin-cam 531 cc engine with four CV carburetors, it could produce an output of 44 hp/8,000 rpm and a top speed of 130 km/h. As a compact 2-seater with a convertible body, the S500 won acclaim for its outstanding performance and agility, winning the support of younger generations. This model later evolved into the S600 and the S800, laying the groundwork for Honda’s car manufacturing division.
