“昭和40年代は経済の発展やモータリゼーションの急激な進展により、大気汚染や交通事故など様々な弊害が出てきた。このような中、1971年米国でのマスキー法の成立に伴い、日本でも同様の排出ガス規制が実施された。当時この規制は大変厳しいもので、達成は不可能と言われていたが1973年、こちらのシビックがCVCCエンジンで世界に先駆けて基準を達成した。”

From the mid-1960s onwards, rapid economic growth and progress in motorization began to take their toll in the form of air pollution and rising traffic accident numbers. Following the introduction of the 1971 Muskie Act in the U.S., Japan adopted similar emission control measures. These regulations were so stringent that many considered them unenforceable, but the Honda Civic with its CVCC engine managed to clear the new standards in 1973, ahead of any of its rivals worldwide.
