“大衆車のスポーティ化傾向は徐々に拡大の傾向をみせ、1600ccクラスにもそれはおよんだ。トヨタもコロナ・ハードトップを基本としたスポーツクーペ、1600GTを登場させることになる。9R型DOHCエンジンを積み込み、小型ではあったが最高速度は175km/h。快適な居住空間やトヨタ2000GTと同じ5速ミッションを備えた(4速仕様も存在)本格的な高性能ツーリングカーとして、高い人気を得たのである。”

As the trend that took small family cars to a sportier level also began to encroach into the 1600 cc class, Toyota responded by releasing the 1600GT. Equipped with the 9R DOHC engine, the Corona Hardtop-based sports coupe achieved a top speed of 175 km/h. Though small in size, it had a comfortable interior. Featuring the same 5-speed transmission as the Toyota 2000GT (4-speed transmission was also available), the 1600GT enjoyed great popularity as a truly high-performing touring car.
