“オールズモビルも1887年からつくっていた蒸気式3輪車に代わって、ガソリン車を1896年に完成させたが、注目すべきことは1901年に発表したカーブドダッシュで、世界初の大量生産方式を採用したことだ。1902年には2,500台、1903年には4,000台、1904年には5,000台が売られ、当時のヨーロッパ最大のメーカー、ド・ディオン・ブートン社の年間1,200台の生産台数と比較しても、この数字の重要性がよくわかる。”

Oldsmobile founder R.E. Olds built a 3-wheeled steamer in 1887 and a gasoline-powered vehicle in 1896. However, what truly distinguished this car manufacturer was the world’s first mass-production system, which it employed to launch the Curved Dash in 1901. Sales volume climbed from 2,500 units in 1902 to 4,000 in 1903, and 5,000 in 1904. The enormity of these figures becomes apparent when they are compared with the production volume at De Dion-Bouton, Europe’s largest automaker at the time, which only came to about 1,200 vehicles a year.
