Stanley Steamer Model E2
The Stanley firm began manufacturing steam-powered automobiles in 1897, and achieved great success by steadily adding improvements to its products. The Stanley’s characteristic round-nosed bonnet was introduced in 1905, when the boiler was moved to the front of the car and encased in a water tank. A 2-cylinder slide-valve engine was placed under the floor. There was no gearbox, and the axle was directly driven by means of a spur gear connected to the axle. The Stanley “Steamer” remained in production until 1927, as it was quiet and relatively free of vibration, produced good torque, was easy to handle, and could achieve high speeds. In fact, a Stanley set a world speed record of 127.66 mph in 1906 in Ormond Beach, Florida.
