“3輪車を一歩進めて4輪車の設計を開始したベンツは、まずキングピン式の前輪操向システムで、1893年にドイツ帝国の特許を取得。これを採用してつくられたベンツ最初の4輪車が“ヴィクトリア”であり、ひと回り小さい“ヴェロ”は1894年に発売された。フライホイールが垂直になるようにエンジンがセットされ、プーリーとベルトによる2段変速機からデフを介してチェーンで後輪を駆動、時速21kmで走行できた。”

Having developed the 3-wheeler, Karl Benz began designing a 4-wheeled car. He obtained a German Empire patent for the kingpin front-wheel-steering system in 1893, and went on to build the Viktoria, his first 4-wheeled car. A smaller version of the Viktoria, the Velo, was placed on the market in 1894. The Velo had a vertical flywheel engine and a 2-speed belt and pulley transmission, and could go at a speed of 21 km/h with the rear axle driven by a chain through a differential gear.
