“F・H・ロイスとC・S・ロールスは1904年、完璧な自動車をつくるためRR社を創立。徹底した製品管理のもとに高品質な高級車をつくりはじめ、1906年、最大の傑作といわれる40/50馬力の6気筒車を発表した。この13番目のシャシーに全身銀色のツアラーボディを載せて、RAC(英国王立自動車クラブ)の監督下、グラスゴー～ロンドン間を昼夜ノンストップで、延べ15,000マイルをほとんどトラブルなしに走破。幽霊のように静かでスムーズな走行性と塗色から”シルバーゴースト”と呼ばれるようになった。こうした信頼性とともにシルバーゴーストの軽量かつ耐久性の高いシャシーは高く評価され、第1次世界大戦では装甲車などの重いボディを架装して熱砂の戦場を駆けめぐったことでも、その性能の高さは実証されている。もちろんシルバーゴーストは高価であることは間違いない。しかし、高い品質を持った量産車として、フォード・モデルTと行き方は違うが、高級車の源流になったのである。”

Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghost
The origin of Rolls-Royce goes back to 1904, when F.H. Royce and C.S. Rolls began collaborating to produce as perfect a car as possible. They soon formed a partnership to release several new models, before announcing a high-quality luxury car in 1906 that was to become their greatest masterpiece. This 40/50 hp, 6-cylinder engine model was tested scrupulously before production started, and the 13th prototype chassis fitted with a silver touring body was put to an endurance test under the supervision of the Royal Automobile Club. The silver car ran 15,000 miles nonstop between Glasgow and London with no mechanical problems, earning the “Silver Ghost” nickname for its eerily smooth and quiet ride. The lightweight chassis was so durable and reliable that many were fitted with heavily armored bodies and sent across desert battlegrounds during WWI. The Silver Ghost became the forerunner of today’s luxury cars, proving that not all production cars needed to take the path of economy pioneered by the Ford Model T.
