No history of American sports cars would be complete without mention of Stutz. The first Stutz, built in 1911, was entered for the Indianapolis 500-mile race, and many of the firm’s production cars — including those released shortly after its first Indy 500 race — were also sporty models. Of the many Stutz cars that proved victorious in races, perhaps the most famous was the Bearcat. Released in 1914, the Bearcat was a spartan roadster with nothing but two bucket seats, a pillow-shaped fuel tank, and a spare tire on a bare chassis. Even the windshield was dispensed with, a small disc of glass attached to the steering column serving in its place. This spare yet wildly attractive roadster was so popular that it continued to be produced until 1925.
