“エセックスは、ハドソン社の小型車部門として1921年からコーチと呼ばれるセダン型を主に生産していた。標準型がまだホロ型であったその頃のアメリ力車では異例なことであった。しかし第1次世界大戦後から,大衆の間であがりはじめたセダン型を望む声に、いち早く、しかもホロ型に近い価格で対応したエセックスに、いちばん脅威を感じたのはやはりフォードであろう。大衆車の高級化はすでにはじまっていたのである。”

Essex Coach
Essex Motors started out as the Hudson Motor Car Company’s small car division, and in 1921 it began producing fully enclosed sedans (known as coaches) as its mainstay. This was unusual because canvas-topped open touring cars were standard in the U.S. at the time. Demand for sedans rose steadily after WWI, but Essex was the first to offer an enclosed sedan that could compete in terms of price with canvas-topped cars. Ford must have felt especially threatened
