Toyota MR2 Model AW11 (1984, Japan)
The Toyota SV-3, a compact midship concept car exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show in fall 1983, was placed on the market in 1984 under the name MR2, which stands for “midship runabout 2-seater.” Developed mainly for young people who loved driving, the MR2 became Japan’s first production midship sports car. It featured athletic styling with retractable headlamps and a matching interior, to the satisfaction of sporty-minded drivers. The DOHC 16-valve engine sourced from the Corolla was mounted right behind the seats. The MR2 claimed the 1984-1985 Car of the Year title.
