“１９６０－７０年当時、４WD（４輪駆動車)と言えば、頑丈さが取り柄のオフロードタイプばかりでした。１９７１年東北電力の要請に応じて数台が注文生産された「１３００Gバン４輪駆動車」から得た経験を基に、乗用車の快適性と４WDの踏破力を合わせ持つ、乗用車タイプの４WDにも市場ニーズがあると考えたスバルは、１９７２年、世界に先駆けて、レオーネエステートバンをベースに４WDモデルを発売しました。水平対向エンジンは４WDとのマッチングが良く、シンプルでバランスの取れた構造で、その利点を生かし、その後スバル４WDは高速性能を重視したレオーネ４WDターボ、ドライビングの楽しさ、安全性を追求したレガシィへと発展していきました。”

Subaru Leone Estatevan 4WD
During the 1960s and 1970s, the 4WD market was dominated by rugged off-road vehicle. What gave Subaru a pause was an order for 4WD vans from Tohoku Electric Power Company.The experience of delivering a handful of made-to-order 1300G Van 4WDs in 1971 made Subaru aware of a potential market for sedan-like 4WDs. Acting on this insight, the company released the world’s first 4WD vehicle of the kind in 1972, using the Leone Estate Van as the base model.As a horizontally-opposed engine was highly compatible with the 4WD configuration, and also structually simple and well-balanced, Subaru built on this technology to extend its 4WD lines, subsequently releasing the Leone 4WD Turbo with enhanced high-speed performance, and the the Legacy, which combined driving pleasure with superior safety performance.Replacing the Mitsubishi
