First released in the North American market as the Mazda Miata in May 1989, the Eunos Roadster was placed on the Japanese market in September of the same year through the newly introduced Eunos dealership. While the market for small, sporty open 2-seaters was all but extinct at the time, the debut of the Eunos Roadster instantly caused a sensation throughout the world, prompting rival manufacturers to release their own open 2-seaters. In developing this car, Mazda adopted the unique design concept of seamlessly integrating the driver and the car, which was also applied to the second- and third-generation models.
