2ストローク・2気筒ロードスポーツのYDSシリーズの3代目モデル。2ストロークエンジンに革新をもたらした分離給油システム「オートルーブ」の採用、低中速域の性能向上、3段切り替え式リアショック採用などによって、市街地での走行性や扱いやすさを高め、海外でも多くのファンを獲得した。（※展示車両では音叉マークとなっている燃料タンクのエンブレムは発売から半年後に「YAMAHA」に変更された）

YDS-3
This was the third generation model of the YDS series of 2-stroke, 2-cylinder road sports bikes. With the “Autolube” separate oil supply system that revolutionized 2-stroke engine models, increased low- to mid-speed performance and a 3-way adjustable shock absorber, it achieved improved riding performance and handling in city areas and attracted many new fans internationally as a Japanese sport model.
*The tuning fork mark on the tank was changed to “YAMAHA” six months after the release.
