Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., originally an airplane manufacturer (Nakajima Aircraft Company), built the Subaru 360, the first successful minivehicle in Japan. It had a monocoque body with a torsion bar spring for suspension and a surprisingly spacious cabin for its size, achieving a very comfortable ride. Except for the stiff initial price of ¥425,000, it completely satisfied the vision of a “people’s car” and proved to be extremely popular.
