As a young entrepreneur, Errett Lobban Cord acquired Auburn in 1924 and Duesenberg in 1927. Backed by these resources, he went on to release the epoch-making front-wheel-drive car bearing his name in 1929. Sales of the Cord L-29 were unimpressive, however, and production had to be suspended. An improved model was released in 1935 as the Cord 810, which was followed by the enhanced model 812. In the tradition of the L-29, the 812 employed a front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration, as well as many advanced features including a radiator positioned in the engine room, retractable headlights, and an electrically controlled vacuum shift gearbox. Perhaps what made the Cord truly stand out was the enthusiasm of its engineers and designers in pursuing their ideals.
